Sending Materials to For-Profit Companies

When sending Pitt materials to for-profit companies, it is important for the Office of Sponsored Programs (OSP) to know if there is also collaborative activity by Pitt faculty (ex: expectation of data exchange, work that leads to joint publication, etc.), or if the company is receiving the material without any further Pitt faculty intellectual contribution or involvement.

If it is not a collaborative project or if it is unclear, then a license agreement negotiated by the Innovation Institute may be appropriate, which will specify the terms under which the company can use the material. Faculty can contact the Innovation Institute about licensing agreements through their webpage: Contact - Office of Innovation and Entrepreneurship (pitt.edu).

For more information about standard Material Transfer Agreements (MTAs) issued by OSP, see the OSP MTA webpage.
