Financial Risks Associated with Advance Accounts

Establishing an advance account prior to the formal receipt, review, and acceptance of an award by the University carries financial risks.

Advance accounts are intended to be temporary states in MyFunding and used when an award is known to be forthcoming. It is important to note that if the award fails to materialize, or if the award has a different budget total or project period than expected, the Department is accountable for covering any expenses incurred on the Advance Account not reimbursed by the sponsor. Therefore, careful considerations should be made if planning to open an advance account.

Departmental research administrators should monitor all awards (AWDs) currently in an Advance Account state and alert the Office of Sponsored Programs (OSP) as soon as an anticipated award is received so that the award can be reviewed and formally accepted by the University.

For more information about Advance Account requests, visit the OSP website.
